PDF is the most used file format for compatibility with almost any device. At some point, you may be wondering how to convert a PDF to DWG while working on a design file. There are some simple ways to convert PDF back to CAD file types, and there are many PDFs that can be downloaded to the DWG converter tools, as well as the DWG converter tools available online at PDF.

These online tools and software’s are worst, just because they are not converting into the compatible correctly. They offer you free but, at a conversion time, show you a price list, and this is the total waste of time.

Below are some simple ways to help you easily convert a PDF to CAD format while retaining all the information related to the design.

File Format that supports AutoCAD

For elaborate information related to AutoCAD, a specific file format is required to store it. Raster file types, which store colour information, are therefore inappropriate. Instead, vector file formats are essential. These formats store each object (such as a line or circle) as a separate, editable unit so that the user can attach additional data. AutoCAD supports many different file extensions, though two are correctly standing out: DWG and DXF.

DWG

History of DWG format goes hand in hand with AutoCAD itself. DWG has acted as the original file format for AutoCAD since its first release in 1982 and is one of the most popular file formats in CAD. Due to its popularity, there are several ways to view DWG files without AutoCAD.

Looking at its status as the original file format of AutoCAD, it should not be surprising to know that DWG is a vector file format. AutoCAD updates the DWG format from time to time to reflect changes in AutoCAD from time to time. That means the DWG is the ideal format for faithful AutoCAD users – especially those who use AutoCAD-specific entities in their pictures. Besides, DWG also supports both 2D and 3D graphics, making it a flexible choice for designers.

DXF

Although DWG is the original form of AutoCAD, Autodesk knows it well, and it is not always the ideal choice of a designer. That’s why it created the DXF file format. Unlike DWG, whose primary purpose is to use in AutoCAD, DXF is an open standard. That means almost any CAD software in the market can open DXF file. As such, it is ideal for users who often collaborate with designers using the option of AutoCAD.

DXF, in many ways, is similar to DWG. Both are vector file formats, capable of displaying objects and data in the AutoCAD drawing. However, there are some essential differences. The purpose of DWG is to reflect the full range of automated institutions and facilities. Meanwhile, DXF is meant to act as a Lingua franca (It is also known as a bridge language, common language, trade language) for many different types of CAD software. Thus, it does not support many of AutoCAD-specific entities, which DWG does. It also lacks support for 3D graphics – however, unlike DWG, it is a suitable format for CNC machines.

Which format (DWG or DXF) should I choose to Convert PDF?

There are some advantages and disadvantages to choosing DWG or DXF file formats. However, as a general rule of thumb, you should consider both applications that are used by you and by those you often collaborate with.

If you work correctly with AutoCAD (especially if you need to take advantage of any software-specific features), then the DWG is the way to go. If you do not support 3D graphics with 3D CAD, then it is also important that you work with 3D CAD DWG comes with a bonus in addition to being a binary file type, which means small file size.

If you often cooperate with designers who do not use AutoCAD, then DXF is a better option. Although it is more limited in terms of its functionality, it is perfect for 2D CAD and CNC purposes. However, one downside is that it is an ASCII file format, which can result in large file sizes. For more information, see our guide, which vector file is right for you.

How to Convert PDF to AutoCAD Drawing (DWG File Format)?

Steps:

(1) On the command line, type “importpdf” or from the Insert menu, pick “PDF import…”

(2) In the dialogue box, under Mode, Insert as Block is pre-selected. For batch processing of PDF drawings, you can switch to the Batch processing bullet.

(3) Under Options, you will find additional choices, as shown below.

(4) Click on the Browse button, navigate to the PDF file that you want to import and select it.

(5) From Modify menu, pick Explode or type Explode on the command line to convert the PDF drawing from a block into individual editable entities.

(6) Now, you are ready to save the file as a.DWG drawing file.

How to work with importing PDF Data?

You can import items in a PDF file or PDF underlay in your current drawing file

Import the Data from a PDF File

  1. Click Insert tab -> Import panel -> PDF Import.
  2. In the Select PDF File dialogue box, specify the PDF file that you want to import, and click Open.
  3. In the Import PDF dialogue box:
    1. If the PDF has multiple pages, choose the page to import by clicking a thumbnail image or by entering a page number.
    2. Set or clear Specify Insertion Point On-screen as needed.
    3. Set the scale and rotation.
    4. Set the options for importing geometry, fills, raster images, and TrueType text objects.
    5. Choose what method to apply for assigning imported objects to layers.
    6. Set options to control how PDF objects are processed after being imported.
    7. Click OK.
  4. Specify the insertion point if prompted.

Import a Specified Area from a PDF Underlay

  1. Select the PDF underlay.
  2. On the PDF underlay contextual tab, Click Import as Objects.
  3. At the prompt, click two diagonal points that define a rectangular crossing area, or choose one of the other options. A crossing area is similar to a crossing selection. The Settings option displays a dialogue box in which you can choose what types of objects to import, how layers should be accommodated, whether the imported objects should be imported as a block and several other options.
  4. Choose whether you want to keep, detach, or unload the attached PDF after the selected objects have been imported.

The specified area of the attached PDF is imported into the drawing as AutoCAD objects.
