Although DWG is the original form of AutoCAD, Autodesk knows it well, and it is not always the ideal choice of a designer. That’s why it created the DXF file format. Unlike DWG, whose primary purpose is to use in AutoCAD, DXF is an open standard. That means almost any CAD software in the market can open DXF file. As such, it is ideal for users who often collaborate with designers using the option of AutoCAD.
DXF, in many ways, is similar to DWG. Both are vector file formats, capable of displaying objects and data in the AutoCAD drawing. However, there are some essential differences. The purpose of DWG is to reflect the full range of automated institutions and facilities. Meanwhile, DXF is meant to act as a Lingua franca (It is also known as a bridge language, common language, trade language) for many different types of CAD software. Thus, it does not support many of AutoCAD-specific entities, which DWG does. It also lacks support for 3D graphics – however, unlike DWG, it is a suitable format for CNC machines.
Which format (DWG or DXF) should I choose to Convert PDF?

How to Convert PDF to AutoCAD Drawing (DWG File Format)?
(1) On the command line, type “importpdf” or from the Insert menu, pick “PDF import…”
(2) In the dialogue box, under Mode, Insert as Block is pre-selected. For batch processing of PDF drawings, you can switch to the Batch processing bullet.
(3) Under Options, you will find additional choices, as shown below.
(4) Click on the Browse button, navigate to the PDF file that you want to import and select it.
(5) From Modify menu, pick Explode or type Explode on the command line to convert the PDF drawing from a block into individual editable entities.
(6) Now, you are ready to save the file as a.DWG drawing file.

Import the Data from a PDF File
- Click Insert tab -> Import panel -> PDF Import.
- In the Select PDF File dialogue box, specify the PDF file that you want to import, and click Open.
- In the Import PDF dialogue box:
- If the PDF has multiple pages, choose the page to import by clicking a thumbnail image or by entering a page number.
- Set or clear Specify Insertion Point On-screen as needed.
- Set the scale and rotation.
- Set the options for importing geometry, fills, raster images, and TrueType text objects.
- Choose what method to apply for assigning imported objects to layers.
- Set options to control how PDF objects are processed after being imported.
- Click OK.
- Specify the insertion point if prompted.
Import a Specified Area from a PDF Underlay
- Select the PDF underlay.
- On the PDF underlay contextual tab, Click Import as Objects.
- At the prompt, click two diagonal points that define a rectangular crossing area, or choose one of the other options. A crossing area is similar to a crossing selection. The Settings option displays a dialogue box in which you can choose what types of objects to import, how layers should be accommodated, whether the imported objects should be imported as a block and several other options.
- Choose whether you want to keep, detach, or unload the attached PDF after the selected objects have been imported.
The specified area of the attached PDF is imported into the drawing as AutoCAD objects.
